Dress sizing, let’s get it right!

Unless you have been lucky enough to be graced with perfect proportions, you (like me) may have struggled at some point to get the perfect fit from a standard size dress.

Most of us have a body part that is bigger (or smaller) than the rest of us. Petite or tall, top heavy, pear shaped, you name it, most of us don’t fall perfectly on a size chart.

For everyday wear we are often willing to make the compromise. I can’t say it normally worries me if on the high street I have to go up or down a size and hope for the best. I think nearly all of us has owned items of clothing and experienced buyers remorse as the fit just isn’t right. You find yourself pulling at a hem or hoicking straps up that are that bit too long.

A wedding dress is often the most important (and expensive) dress purchase you’ll ever make. Fit may be a compromise you’re no longer willing to make.

Yes, wedding dresses can sometimes be dramatically altered by a skilled seamstress. However, if you are a tiny girl with a big bust, you are never going to have the same finished look by ordering a dress much bigger and having it taken in every where else.

If you are pear shaped (bottom heavy), it’s not ideal to end up with a dress that originally had bust cups two sizes too big.

Equally if you are petite or tall, simply having a dress made longer or having loads taken off the hem will never give you those same proportions as having a dress made for your body.

All dresses will need some minor alterations to achieve the ideal fit, even made-to-measure gowns will require some adjustments. But starting off with a gown that is as close to fitting as possible is definitely the best starting point.

This is why all of our collection is available with either split sizing (different size bodice and skirt, eg. 10 top, 12 bottom) or made-to-measure (where your measurements are taken and your dress is made to fit these).

At Perla Nova we will talk you through all of these options during your appointment and help you decide which will best suit you. You may be worried this can add ££££ to the price of your gown but we promise you it really doesn’t.

If you are lucky enough to have been blessed with a beautifully proportioned figure (I’m very jealous), it may be that a standard size is the best and most cost effective option.

Either way, we will ensure you feel informed and understand all options available to you. We are passionate about not just finding you your dream bridal look, but ensuring you feel comfortable, confident and look the best you’ve ever felt!
